‘Ayurveda’ means ‘Science of life’, which comprises‘ Ayur’ as life and ‘Veda’ as science. And according to the definition of Ayurveda in an ancient Sanskrit verse, “Ayurasminvidyate” defines Ayurveda as a science that deals with “Ayur” (life) and prolongs the lifespan. Ayurveda is an ancient procedure of life and the oldest surviving medical science globally to heal diseases and enhance longevity. Its influence can be found in many other ancient traditional healing methods, including Greek, Chinese and Tibetan medicines, thus making it the ‘mother of healing.’
The fundamentals on which the Ayurveda system is based are essentially suitable for all ages and can be freely adopted time after time, century after century. The philosophy of Ayurveda teaches a series of conceptual systems characterized by balance and disorder, health and illness. It teaches that a person’s mental, emotional and spiritual being are all interconnected, and any imbalance between them results in health disorders and diseases. Therefore, harmony must exist between the purpose for healing, thoughts, feelings, and physical action to be healthy.
The focus of Ayurveda is to balance the energies responsible for life, unlike other medical systems, Ayurvedic treatment is focused on removing the cause of disease. Every individual has a unique body, and it is the concept on which Ayurveda works. Here are the three body types according to the Ayurveda that must be examined before treatment:
Vata: Consists of air and space.
Kapha: Based on earth and water.
Pitta: Based on fire and water.
Mind and body are essential parts of the human being, and overall health comprises a healthy mind and body. The five vital elements that make up the human body are fire (Agni), earth (Prithvi), water (Jal), air (Vayu) and space (Akaash). The Tridoshas are made up of these elements, and every person is born with a unique combination of the doshas. This unique combination determines the person’s nature (Prakruti). Ayurveda yearns to understand this element, and all the treatments are based on the Prakruti. Therapies and exercises can balance the Tridoshas, and the mind can be balanced by practicing meditation, Japa and Pranayama. The treatment includes diet, exercises, detoxification, and herbal and chemical medication, along with rejuvenation therapy.
